Chicken Coops

Choose Your Coop

Learn About Chicken Coops

What is a chicken Coop?

A chicken coop is a covered, secure area where the chickens sleep. The coop needs shade, adequate ventilation and approximately four square feet per standard-sized bird. Most importantly, it should be secure to keep the chickens in and predators out. Make sure the location is in compliance with City ordinances. In addition to having a chicken coop, you will also need these essentials to properly care for your flock: a run, a nesting box, roost, and bedding.

Coop Essentials

A Run

A run is an area, usually enclosed, that the chickens use during the day. The run should have at least six square feet per bird.

A Nesting Box

Nesting boxes are comfortable spaces for chickens to lay eggs within the coop. Nesting boxes should provide privacy and good ventilation. The coop will need one nesting box per four or five hens. Dimensions are generally 12 inches long, 12 inches wide and 14 inches high.

A Roost

Chickens like to sleep on a perch on a roost which are bars, where chickens perch to sleep at night inside the coop. Roosts should ideally be 18 to 24 inches from the ground, with eight to 10 inches of roosting space per bird. The perch should be covered by a roof, but allow enough space for air to flow underneath it.

Bedding

Bedding is used to line the coop and nesting boxes, and can consist of leaves, straw, hay, pine shavings, wood chips or other organic, absorbent materials. Do not use cedar or juniper shavings because they are toxic to chickens! Hay works great as bedding but is more expensive than other options. Wood chips and pine shavings are less expensive.

What Drives Us

Our Mission

Chicken Tenders is leading the backyard chicken movement by inspiring and educating backyard flock owners about the joys of raising chickens and building and providing services for all things chicken related. We are a woman-owned business focusing on helping anyone who wants one to build and maintain an enjoyable backyard brood.

About US

Welcome to the flock.

Hi! We are the Combs family and friends; as a collective we are Chicken Tenders ATX.

Most of us have grown up with or near a farm, and as we’ve all grown with families of our own, our love for the farm life hasn’t faded. We now live in the city and we’re on a mission to help other city-dwellers compromise their city needs and foster the heart’s desire by keeping a small backyard brood.

Your chickens can be pets who help your children learn about the circle of life and develop an appreciation for our harmonious planet, or to give them an opportunity to get dirty and learn how to lovingly care for creatures who provide for us. No matter what your goal is for wanting a brood, we want to help others in their chicken-tending endeavors! It can be overwhelming planning for and implementing the entire process, which is why we want to help you build your own backyard brood!

Featured Chicks
CHICKALETTA

Chickaletta

Chickaletta is our buff orpington. She runs and hides from hawks in an “everyone for themselves” manner.  We always know we can find her head down- butt up in a flower pot thinking to herself “if I can’t see it, it can’t see me”.

Chicken Tender ATX

Chicken Butt

Chicken Butt is our Americauna. She is at the top of the pecking order and her job is to warn everyone if there is a hawk in the sky, she is very good at it! She recently was pounced on by our dog and possibly suffered a stroke, but after lots of syringe and spoon feeding she is back to her baseline as leader of the brood.

Chicken Tender ATX

Hei Hei

Hei Hei is a Red Star, is very intelligent (we can just tell) and acts most like a pet. She lays at our feet sometimes like a dog, “spread eagle” to soak up the sun.
